Up and down

The installation was made for a site specific group exhibition in a large warehouse in East London. All the artists exhibiting had worked together (paid job) in the space for over a year. The exhibition was for one night only and was to mark the demolition of the building.
The projection was actual size, projected directly onto the wall of the factory’s large, darkened entrance hall and was framed by the floor line and adjacent door.
The starting point was a desire to emphasise a phenomenon that would occur daily in the studio: the shutters opening  for deliveries. Being the only opening towards the outside world it always captivated our attention. My intention was to transform this normal occurence into something special: a staged performance with minimal intervention. By filming the shutters going up and down at different times of the day, I intended to reveal the beauty of the environmental changes caused by the weather and by human activity on the industrial surrounding. The movement of the shutters was reminiscent a of theatre curtain, playing with the anticipation of the viewer but showing only minimal changes to the set.
