At work

2006
(what are youse up to in here?)
The project was made for Cabin Exchange 2006.
Cabin Exchange is a week-long public art event that places storage containers on the streets of Glasgow and Edinburgh. During this time the temporary spaces are accommodated and transformed by artists.
The container was placed on a very small street in a run down part of Glasgow’s East End. The street has only two buildings. One, a dilapidated house hosting a glazier’s business, the other the Kirkhaven Church, an A-listed building restored and converted into luxury office space for businesses run by women. The cabin being in the middle of the two seemed the perfect site to not only examine those striking differences but also to bring the workers together and establish a connection between them.
After spending a few days filming in both places, I edited the film, dividing the screen and making visual parallels between the two places. I focused on the actions and rhythms of daily life and the aesthetic details of both places. Utilising slow motion, speed and close ups to emphasise similarity and difference. The cabin was transformed into a screening room and the staff of both places were invited to see the film. These contrasting working environments offered an exciting platform to examine the perceptions, curiosity and prejudice of others.
